This year we no longer need \u201crequired programs\u201d to qualify for star council but the featured programs have been expanded. We currently have sixteen \u201cFeatured<\/strong> Programs<\/strong>\u201d providing councils with two ways to qualify for the Columbian Award. Traditionally a council needs to sponsor four programs <\/strong>in each of the four Service Program categories (Faith, Community, Family, Life Activities) and reports them on the Columbian Award Application (No. SP-7), which is due by June 30.<\/p>\n

The second way to qualify is to sponsor one or more of the sixteen \u201cFeatured<\/strong> Programs<\/strong>,\u201d and receive two credits towards meeting the minimum participation criteria for that program. A council does not need to conduct all sixteen. For example, if a council participates in RSVP <\/strong>and sponsors Coats for Kids <\/strong>distribution with a minimum of eight cases of coats given away, they\u2019ve met two of four needed credits in the Faith and part of the Community categories.<\/p>\n

To qualify for the Columbian Award, they would report these programs <\/strong>on the Columbian Award application. The sixteen \u201cFeatured<\/strong> Programs<\/strong>,\u201d and the minimum participation criteria for each, are as follows:<\/p>\n

Faith Programs:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

RSVP<\/strong><\/a> – Qualify for and receive the refund for supporting at least one seminarian or postulant.<\/p>\n

Holy Hour <\/strong>\u2013 Organize hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.<\/p>\n

Spiritual<\/strong> Reflection<\/strong> \u2013 Organize a spiritual retreat for the council members and family.<\/p>\n

Into the Breach <\/strong>\u2013 Organize a Into the Breach men\u2019s study group.<\/p>\n

Family<\/strong> Programs:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Food for Families<\/strong><\/a> – Council provides 100 man-hours of service and collects at least 1,000 pounds of food to be given to a parish food pantry or community food bank.<\/p>\n

Family<\/strong> of the Month <\/strong>\u2013 Promote a family from your council each month as the family of the month.<\/p>\n

Family<\/strong> Prayer <\/strong>Night <\/strong>\u2013 Organize a family night of prayer.<\/p>\n

Building<\/strong> the Domestic Church <\/strong>\u2013 Make the Building the Domestic Church reading series available to the parish.<\/p>\n

\n

Life<\/strong> (Culture<\/strong> of Life) Programs<\/strong>:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Walk<\/strong> for Life<\/strong><\/a> – Council organizes parish and community participation to provide at least 100 marchers for a local, regional or national walk.<\/p>\n

Ultrasound<\/strong><\/a> – Council raises at least half the funds for purchase of ultrasound equipment for a pregnancy care center (Balance comes from Supreme Council)<\/p>\n

Special<\/strong> Olympics<\/strong><\/a> – Contribute at least 200 man-hours of service to state\/local Special Olympics <\/strong>activities; donate at least $2,000 for Special Olympics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Pregnancy<\/strong> Center<\/strong> Support<\/strong> – \u00a0Partner with qualified pregnancy centers to raise money for the procurement of an ultrasound macine.<\/p>\n

Community<\/strong> Programs:<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Habitat<\/strong> for<\/strong> Humanity<\/strong><\/a> – Council sponsors at least one Habitat project providing a minimum of 200 man- hours of service and donates at least $1000 to Habitat.<\/p>\n

Global \u00a0Wheelchair \u00a0Mission<\/strong><\/a> \u00a0<\/strong>– \u00a0Council \u00a0raises \u00a0the \u00a0funds \u00a0for \u00a0100 wheelchairs at \u00a0$150 \u00a0\u2013 \u00a0distributed \u00a0by American Wheelchair Mission.<\/p>\n

Coats<\/strong> for<\/strong> Kids<\/strong><\/a> – Council purchases at least 8 cases of warm winter coats through Coats for Kids <\/strong>to give to needy kids.<\/p>\n

Leave <\/strong>No Neighbor Behind <\/strong>\u2013 Fundraise for a local food bank or directly assist a shelter-in-place person in need. Report your activities with the Leave No Neighbor Behind survey at www.kofc.org\/neighbor<\/a>.<\/p>\n
